Wine Barrel Carving by Maryland Artist Tom Crowl.

Wine Barrel Carving Process
Step Four - Transfer The Pattern

Tranfer of the carving pattern onto a wine barrel head.As the pattern is laid down, I look at the oak and uses the grain as a guide to get the best possible results from the design.  The pattern is taped onto the barrel head using masking tape.  Carbon transfer paper is placed underneath the pattern and the design is out-lined by hand.  During this process, the design is changed slightly just by the human element.  Some letters are given larger kerfs to insure the oak won't split and ruin a design.  (That has happened and after days of carving can result in some very choice expressions of frustration!)
