Cherry Wooden
Goblet #133
With Captive
Unity Ring
7.5" in height with a 2 1/2" diameter, this solid cherry goblet holds approximately 8 oz. of liquid. There is a very light curl to the grain that is visible in the photo.
The Captive ring is cut from the solid block of wood as the goblet is turned on the lathe. First the bowl is turned and hollowed, next the stem is started. While still thick, the chisel cuts into the wood on either side of the intended ring. The ring is rounded over and then the wood is cut in from both sides until the ring is separated from the block.
With the ring bouncing and spinning, the remainder of the stem is cut and then the base is formed. The final result is a wooden ring locked onto the wooden goblet. The ring may only be removed by breaking it or the goblet. Over the years, captive rings have come to symbolize Unity and are popular features on wooden wedding goblets and chalices.
